Tips for Improving Mental Health: Journaling
March 10, 2021
This week’s simple yet powerful suggestion for enhancing mental well-being involves the practice of journaling. Embracing this activity has demonstrated notable connections to stress reduction, alleviating depression, and mitigating anxiety. Journaling serves as a valuable tool for delving into internal struggles that might be challenging to articulate verbally. It offers opportunities for fostering positive self-talk and cultivating self-love.
The experience of journaling varies for each individual. For some, it entails reflecting on the events of the day, capturing both the positive and challenging moments. Some may find solace in this daily reflection, as it not only aids memory but also helps plan for the upcoming day. Alternatively, individuals may take their daily entries a step further, engaging in introspection by considering what they might have done differently or exploring the emotions tied to specific moments in their day.
The beauty of journaling lies in its versatility. Those who find a daily rundown less appealing can explore online platforms with prompts designed for daily completion. These prompts may include crafting daily affirmations—positive statements affirming goals in their accomplished state. For instance, a powerful affirmation like “I am enough” resonates with many individuals navigating the challenges of college life. Other prompts may involve listing three things you love about yourself, describing yourself to a stranger, or writing a paragraph on what brought you joy that day.
These journaling practices, requiring minimal time investment, and offer a structured approach for beginners. Experimenting with various prompts allows individuals to identify those that resonate most, gradually incorporating them into a daily routine. Journaling emerges not only as an expressive outlet but also as a safe space for introspection, providing an avenue to release emotions or simply shower oneself with a little extra self-love.

I have found journaling to be most therapeutic throughout my life. Not only is the writing therapeutic in the way of releasing your thoughts and ideas and putting them on paper ( thereby giving you validation) but also rereading and reflecting months later on what you’ve been through and where you have been helps to put your life in perspective.
In your article, you suggest other ways to pursue journaling in ways that I never thought of. Can’t wait to put these methods on paper. Thank you so much!!
