Does Social Media Ruin Our Lives?
September 8, 2021
I don’t know about you, but I spend way too much time on social media, and sometimes it consumes my entire day. It gets in the way of homework and, sometimes, my personal life. Sometimes, I think it’s ruining our lives.
Our generation has always been around the internet, even at a young age. It started as stupid computer games and Myspace (although my parents never let me have one), to what it is now. It makes complete sense for us to be entirely consumed by it, but what are we missing in reality?
Everything is recorded now, and posted on social media, so why spend money on a concert you can watch on YouTube a day later? Or why spend time with your friends when you can just record it? We should start thinking about these things and stop letting social media dictate our entire lives. It is okay if you did not get any good pictures to post on Instagram from a night out with your friends. Remembering those memories is what it is all about.
The other thing to think about is whether social media is good for our mental health. Sometimes when I scroll through social media and see many Instagram Models in a row, my self-confidence is ruined. When I was younger, this really used to haunt me. Now that I am older, I try not to let it get to me. Sometimes, it is hard for me, and for the younger generation of girls, I can only imagine how it feels for them.
Social media is a significant aspect, don’t get me wrong. Much good can come out of it. From connecting with old friends, networking for jobs, and even finding your soulmate, social media is a great way to connect. However, it can consume our entire lives most of the time and change us as people. It happens all the time to so many people, and that is when the question of whether social media is ruining our lives, instead of making it better like most of us believe it is, comes into question.
