Hartford Women’s Basketball Picks Up First Win of The Season!

After starting the season on a 21-game losing streak, the University of Hartford’s Women’s Basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Sunday, taking down Northern Vermont-Johnson by a score of 63-53.

The Hawks got off to a fast start, scoring 24 points in the first quarter as the team shot 11 for 19 (57.98%) from the field to set the tone for the rest of the game. The team ended up scoring almost 36 percent of their shots, making all but one free throw.

Senior guard Irene Primo scored a career-high 21 points, shooting 7 for 16 from the field and 5 of 11 from three-point land. Primo also racked up three rebounds along with two assists. Freshman forward Elena Houghton tied a career-high, putting up 12 points and shooting 6 of 9 from the field. She also picked up six rebounds and stole the ball twice on defense.

Sophomore guards Nayeli Dowding and Ta’Nya Outten each recorded six rebounds, holding down the paint on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court while freshman Zaiha Minnis scored 11 points off the bench.

Taking home her first win as head coach, Polly Thomason, and the Hawks look to spark a late-season winning streak as they will take on Central Connecticut, Wednesday, February 8th in New Britain. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
