Astros manager Dusty Baker has officially confirmed that the 2023 season will be his final season in management, having played 4,222 games both as a player and a manager. Over the course of 26 seasons, Baker saw highs, lows, and controversies. Baker has 2,183 wins, which places him eighth. In addition to being the first African American manager to accomplish that feat, he would also be the first to be enshrined into Cooperstown if he won the lottery. With the Giants, Cubs, Reds, Nationals, and Astros, among other teams, Baker had a winning record in more than four thousand games as a bench player. He is still the only manager in MLB history to lead five different teams to division titles and he was named Manager of the Year three times over the span of his career.
In more than 2,000 games, he played for the Giants and Oakland Athletics, where he amassed a staggering 242 home runs and 1,013 RBIs. Despite the conclusion of his illustrious and lengthy career as a player and manager in the game of baseball, Baker feels that there is still unresolved business. He expressed to ESPN his belief that he has yet to fulfill his life’s obligations. Following Baker’s retirement, the Astros are the sixth team to have a managerial opening available.
