I believe that many students would welcome the opportunity to utilize their dining dollars at off-campus locations near the university. West Hartford and Blue Back Square in particular are known for their restaurants and food offerings. However, the financial constraints that many students face often limit their ability to experience these offerings, despite our close proximity. This issue could be solved if students who have dining dollars, which are part of most meal plans, could spend them at off-campus eateries.
While the university does provide an array of dining options, the chance to explore off-campus dining venues can introduce much-needed variety to students’ culinary experiences. The PDR nights organized by the university are a commendable effort to introduce this variety. Sadly, these events often sell out rapidly, leaving some students unable to participate. If students were given the option to use their dining dollars elsewhere, it would create a more universal and equitable opportunity for all.
This concept aligns well with the fact that our university already offers shuttles that transport students to Blue Back on weekends. This could further strengthen the university’s connection with the local community and support nearby businesses. At present, it appears to be a missed opportunity that offers several potential advantages, including diversifying dining choices and enhancing community relationships.
