This past Sunday, The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 25-22 in a thrilling overtime victory to become Super Bowl 58 champions and back to back Super Bowl winners.
The rematch of superbowl 54 started off quite slow, with the score still at 0-0. Some turnovers and back and forth three and out drives led to the scoreless first quarter. The second quarter was when things started to get going.
On a trick play, 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings found running back Christian McCaffrey, who ran it in for the score, to set up the game’s first touchdown. The 49ers led 10-3 at the half after San Francisco added a field goal and Kansas City kicked one of their own.
The Chiefs’ situation wasn’t looking good at the beginning of the second half. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an interception shortly after the third quarter started, leaving the 49ers defense empty-handed. However, his defense was also failing, as 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was unable to move the ball down the field.
After the Chiefs took a 13-10 lead after three quarters, things started to go their way later in the third quarter. They scored 10 points.
San Francisco finally found their offensive groove in the fourth quarter, scoring nine points in that frame. Sadly, San Francisco’s blocked extra point following a score proved to be the game-winning difference. However, Kansas City held their ground. They responded with six points of their own, including a field goal in the closing seconds to tie the game and send it into overtime.
The 49ers won the coin toss and received the ball first in the Super Bowl—which was only the second overtime game in history. The 49ers managed to seize the lead for the time being only with a field goal following a lengthy drive. But the Chiefs had other ideas. They made some of the better play calls of the game while advancing down the field. The Chiefs attempted one more play with a few seconds remaining, and Mahomes’ touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman sealed the Super Bowl victory in a form that left fans cheering.
Coach Andy Reid never lost up on his squad despite facing many doubts during the season, and they won the championship for the third time in five years and the second year in a row. With their current dynasty in place, the Chiefs will attempt to win three straight in 2019. The 49ers failed to exact revenge and finished the Kyle Shanahan era without a championship.
Still, the NFL season of 2023–2024 is now history. With a record 123.7 million viewers for the big game, the league had yet another fantastic season.
