My colleague argues this week that the self-love movement has had some unintended consequences. While this is true, I want to ensure that we are properly separating the trend of “self-love” and the trend of “self-care.”. The latter is undeniably vital for our overall well-being and serves as a remedy for the complacency that my colleague is concerned about. It serves as the foundation upon which we build resilience and maintain confidence in our abilities. Nurturing ourselves is essential for our mental, emotional, and physical health, which is required to work hard. Self-love manifests in various forms, from practicing good hygiene, like brushing your teeth, to setting boundaries, prioritizing rest, and indulging in activities that bring us joy. It’s about recognizing our worth and treating ourselves with the same kindness and compassion that we extend to others.
Moreover, self-love isn’t just about individual acts; it also encompasses fostering meaningful connections and seeking support from loved ones. Whether it’s sharing our thoughts and feelings with trusted confidants or simply spending quality time with friends and family, nurturing relationships is a fundamental aspect of self-care. Self-care and love are integral parts of being a healthy and functional human being. By prioritizing our well-being and investing in self-care practices, we not only enhance our own lives but also cultivate the capacity to show up more fully for others. It is important to realize how this is in contrast to the complacency that self-love promotes.
