The life of a modern college student is overwhelming. Between classes, homework, clubs, and planning for the future, free time is often hard to come by. Couple that with the constant stimulation from the ubiquitous nature of technology, and days can seem to zip by as quickly as they arrive. It is important to slow down and reflect on things every once in a while, otherwise, burnout and overstimulation can take hold.
I believe that one of the most effective antidotes to the overwhelming factors of college life is creative writing. Giving myself time to write has always been therapeutic. It allows me to use the experiences and ideas I gather in my head for something creative and interesting. I believe that self-expression is an important part of keeping the mind focused and alert. Without taking a step back to collect one’s thoughts, it can often feel like you’re just floating around from activity to activity, lacking the attention necessary to be present in the moment. In my experience, creative writing of any form (short stories, journaling, poetry), has always given me that opportunity to refocus. However, I also find that it is hard to commit to creative writing without being prompted in some way.
Fortunately, UHart’s writing opportunities provide students with the encouragement and incentive to engage in creative expression. Aerie, the university’s literary journal, provides students with a platform to share their writing with the student body each year. Submissions conclude on October 9th, for this year’s edition. I would strongly encourage any students with short stories, or poetry to submit to Aerie. It is a terrific way to gain confidence and receive feedback on your work. For those who missed the submission deadline for Aerie, I encourage you to be on the lookout for the Spring Writing Contest. The contest accepts submissions in a wide variety of categories and typically begins near the start of Spring semester.
In my opinion, it is a credit to the University of Hartford that both of these opportunities exist to encourage creative writing among the student body. I believe that submitting to Aerie and the Spring Writing Contest has made me a more confident and able writer. More importantly, it has given me the motivation to participate in the indispensable act of creativity. I encourage all my fellow students to take advantage of these opportunities and do the same.
