As students at the University of Hartford, we all have times when we need a quiet place to concentrate on homework. But unfortunately, wherever we go, there’s always a group talking or someone playing music without headphones. Whether it’s the library or your living space (if you have a roommate who’s hard to live with, or you’re a commuter, living in a loud house and/or without the time to go home between classes, this announcement is for you!)
There are two simple steps that can be taken by both us as Hartford Hawks, and the University itself, in order to give every student the study environment that they may need. The first step is to create more quiet, focus-oriented spaces on campus, which could include labeling all of the rooms where students hang out and meet on campus based on whether they are a “quiet room,” or a “talking room.” We can also create quieter spaces on campus by making the library’s study rooms a better place to do homework. If you have ever noticed how thin the walls are, you will probably agree with me when I tell you that they could benefit from more effective soundproofing. The second step is to be mindful. Care about the possibility of there being students around you who have social anxiety, or a disability that makes it hard to focus with distractions.
Are you the type of student with limitations that make it difficult to focus outside the classroom? If so, make sure you get involved and tell us about your experiences, so we can make the University of Hartford a more positive learning environment!
