Redtail Records’ jazz jam session was as fresh and fun as ever with both new and returning students gathering to play music for an eager audience in Hawk’s Nest. The atmosphere was lively, yet cozy and it almost felt like an underground coffee house instead of a college sports bar. I was able to enjoy a satisfying meal while being serenaded with smooth jazz, and it was an unexpectedly perfect way to spend my Tuesday night. When the music began, everyone was captivated, watching the show intently.
The jazz was largely experimental, riffing back and forth with varying students jumping into the mix at different times throughout each song. There was an upright bass, some brass instruments, drums, and a keyboard; all staples of the genre. They all blended together in a mix of energetic sound, keeping the energy high. The tempo was fast, then slow, then somewhere in the middle, creating the unique listening experience that jazz is well known for. Everyone seemed to have a great time, clapping for the performers and genuinely tuned in to the show. The whole room felt warm and social, people chattering amongst themselves everywhere you turned. The place was packed and, for once, it was somewhere I wanted to be. Each instrument added its own flavor to every song and fused together perfectly to create a lovely and cheerful sound. Everyone on stage showcased incredible talent and it was a pleasure and a privilege to watch them play. Music has an extraordinary power to bring people together and that was more than evident last night in a room mostly full of strangers just enjoying each other’s company and some great music.
