Last Monday evening, students gathered around the Poe Firepit for a cozy night of literature and sweets at Aerie’s open mic event. With warm cups of hot chocolate and fresh-baked cookies in hand, attendees came together to support a good cause: raising funds for the upcoming print edition of Aerie, the University’s student-run literary journal. This event offered writers the opportunity to share their work aloud, connect with an audience, and grow more confident in their creative voices.
There was a fairly strong turnout; a small crowd filled the chairs and lined the brick wall around the firepit, staying warm with cups of hot cocoa as the sun dipped below the horizon. About eight students performed poetry, but many of them read multiple pieces; these poems ranged from heartfelt narratives to funny fictional tales to introspective reflections. A few of Aerie’s own editors read their own work, some of which were even published in last year’s journal.
The atmosphere was very welcoming; Aerie staff greeted viewers and participants with warmth, explaining exactly what the event was for, and provided a sign-up sheet for those looking to perform. They had a table set up with the drinks and treats, copies of last year’s literary journal, and information about deadlines for this year’s submissions. The crowd listened intensely to the readings, clapping and cheering at the end of each one. It was inspiring to see students come together for a night of literature and support each other in their performances.
As a student-run organization, Aerie relies on events like this open mic to help raise funds for publishing the creative work of UHart students. The night also offered a chance for students to overcome the nerves of reading their poetry aloud in a safe, supportive setting. Aerie hosts several fundraisers throughout the year, so be sure to attend the next event for a chance to support this vibrant student publication!
