When deciding on a college to attend, the “college experience” is one of the biggest contributors to making the decision. Once you arrive at school, it is pretty quickly revealed if you made the right decision during the first semester. If you realize that the decision was the right one for you, there are so many positives that come out of going to college. Other than receiving a degree and education, being on your own for the first time teaches you so much more than a textbook ever could. Living on your own without your parents teaches young people independence. For the first time in your life, you get the opportunity to start making your own decisions. This can be as small as when you wake up in the morning or what you chose to do in your free time. Starting fresh on a college campus is so important in your transition into adulthood. When I got on campus, I had no clue as to what I wanted to do with my life or what career path I wanted to go down. After experiencing new things and testing out the waters, I’ve realized what I love to do. Sometimes getting a change of scenery and leaving your hometown influences allows you to learn more about yourself. Learning what you like is relatively easy on most college campuses. There are so many opportunities for you to take advantage of. For more of a social experience, fraternities and sororities as well as club sports can lead you into a crowd of people much like yourself. If you want to figure out what you want to do in your life, you can join a club or organization and see if this is what you truly want. Opportunities working at the school newspaper as a journalist major or the student government association as a political science major can give you so many skills to bring to the workplace. Money management is another huge aspect of college. If you blow through your summer work savings in your first semester, you’d quickly realize that you need to be more responsible in the future. Figuring out your wants versus needs is just one step in becoming an adult. Regardless of where you go, attending college will most likely teach you more things than just what you learn in class. With all of the endless opportunities, it’s obvious that good things can come of going away to school was a good idea.
