Disney is set to come out with a second photorealistic remake of the Lion King. Jon Favreau’s remake in 2019 made more than a billion at the box office globally. It is no wonder that they are eager to make another remake.

This movie will seek to include the original plotline, but also dive deeper into the mythology of the characters. They are claiming to explore further into Mufasa’s origins, possibly making it a prequel, similar to Lion King 1 ½ in the movie’s animated versions. They also plan to keep some of the original songs while adding new songs as well.

Although there is no word on if the original voice cast, including Beyoncé, Seth Rogan, and Donald Glover, will be returning, we know that Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the original script, will be making another appearance as a writer again. It is expected that Jeff Nathanson will be writing a similar script while incorporating new ideas.

Barry Jenkins, who most notably directed Moonlight and My Josephine, will be directing this film. Jenkin’s has recently said that it has always been a dream to work with Disney and that he has grown up watching these Lion King characters. In a statement, he was quoted saying, “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love, and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”

It is obvious how much people love The Lion King, considering there has been Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, the Lion King 1 ½, in the animated franchise and also inspired Beyonce’s Black is King album. Although there is no release date available for this movie, Disney has called it a top priority.
