General Education Requirements Are A Waste of Time

Kasey Zollo, Managing editor

With registration starting this week, I feel that I need to get one thing off my chest, and I know that many of you agree with me when I say this. General Education requirements are a HUGE waste of time.
Not only will I need Biology for a career path in the communications department anywhere, but they also take up space in my schedule that could be used for classes I may need but will never have the time to take.
I think that Gen Ed courses should be optional. College is supposed to be about learning for your future job, not taking the same courses you took in High School. Now do not get me wrong. A few Gen Ed courses are engaging, like my Native American Cultures class I am taking this semester with Dr. Jarvis. Although I find this class extremely interesting and one of my favorite classes this semester, I should not be forced to take it to get the credits I need to graduate. I should have the option of if I wanted to take it or not.
Gen Ed requirements fill up your schedule, and honestly, it is not fair. I would much rather take extra communication courses that will help me in my future career than sit through a math class I took in High School.
I believe that most kids fail or struggle to do well in their Gen Ed requirements because they simply don’t find them interesting enough to pay more attention or even show up to class. A low grade can cause the student to feel failure, which can drain mental health and cause burnout. This is why I firmly believe that General Education Requirements are a waste of time.
