Students returning to campus for the Fall Semester were met with an unwelcome sight: the Subway located in Konover has been closed permanently. Subway’s closure severely limits dining options for students who prefer to eat a late dinner, leaving Hawk’s Nest as the only on-campus restaurant open until 11:00 pm. The open space in Konover and the student demand for variety in on-campus dining presents an important question: what will replace Subway in the future?
UHart Dining has announced that it is renovating the free space in Konover to create a “contemporary dining space and gathering spot.” It is their stated goal to create a dining space that celebrates Connecticut’s best Pizza, Burgers, and Chicken Wings. The announcement mentions legendary local restaurants like J’ Timothy’s and Louis’ Lunch, but no specific inclusions have been confirmed at this point. Either way, students will have to wait until the 2026 school year to see the final renovations. For the 2025 school year, the closure of Subway will be addressed with extended hours for Hawk’s Nest and the addition of a mobile food trailer on campus.
The verdict is still out on how students will respond to the new options, but many took to the comments section on Instagram to voice their disappointment over Subway’s closure. Hopefully, whatever replaces Subway is embraced and enjoyed by the campus community in the coming years. Until that time, however, losing UHart’s favorite sandwich spot feels like a serious blow to campus dining variety and convenience.
