Netflix’s Russian Doll is worth the watch

I was recently wandering about the home screen on Netflix when I came across this one season series called Russian Doll. I was intrigued by the preview that began to play so I decided to watch it, all of it (beware, the remainder of this article will have spoilers in the show).

This show is a spin-off of the classic scenario where the main character continues to relive the same day over and over again until main character finally learns a life-changing lesson. However, in this show the main character Nadia, has to die for her day to reset. Also, her day always resets in the middle of a birthday party being thrown for her by her friends. Naturally, she begins to think she is just under the influence of an intense drug at the beginning, as she is a wildly independent person and reveals how many drugs she has actually done throughout her life.

It takes a few episodes for her to realize that she is actually dying about every day. I found this to be a nicely dark twist on the plot. I was fully expecting something more light-hearted like Groundhog Day. However, Netflix seems to have made this series have a more Black Mirror type feeling to it. I am a fan of this little dark atmosphere to the movie. I see this as more of a realistic reaction to this crazy circumstance as well. Nadia tries to rationalize the cause of her purgatory the entire time until she realizes that she doesn’t have an endless number of resets to work with.

Towards the end of the series, things and people begin disappearing each time she dies, time is becoming unstable and she must learn her lesson very quick, or everything could disappear forever. I will not reveal what the lesson that is eventually learned is, you will have to watch it for yourselves to figure that out.

I would highly recommend this series if you like dark comedy and mysterious plots.
