In a Commonwealth Coast Conference encounter on Saturday, September 30th at West Hartford’s Al Marzook field, the University of Hartford men’s soccer team faced off against the Suffolk University Rams. The Hawks lost 2-1 after the final buzzer sounded in the 90th minute of play. In the opening period of play, Suffolk scored both of its goals three minutes apart. Damon Smargon’s goal in the 33rd minute was the game’s first. Immediately after that, in the 36th minute, Miguel Varela responded. The first half of the match was completely under Suffolk’s control; they had a lot of possession time and denied the Hawks any real defensive opportunities.
This changed in the second half when the Hawks adopted a fresh offensive strategy. In the 51st minute, Daniele Simeone put Hartford on the scoreboard with a helper from Nicholas Castrovinci. In the second half, Hartford absolutely changed the script, finding offense and making shots. Unfortunately, Suffolk managed to stay in the game and prevail. While Hartford will have to wait until Tuesday, October 3rd when they take on The College of Mount Saint Vincent in front of their home fans in West Hartford, the Rams extend their winning streak to five games.
