The Hartford Hawks Men’s Basketball team returned from a three-game road trip to face America East-leading Vermont Catamounts for a Valentine’s Day matchup. This game was a back-and-forth battle, but Hartford’s own Moses Flowers secured the overtime win to top the Catamounts 75-74 stunningly.
From tip-off, Hartford took an early lead with a three-point barrage. After taking an early 6-2 lead, Vermont returned within one, but Hartford kept the pedal to the medal. The Hawks went on a 13-0 run, scoring 25-13 with a little over eight minutes left in the first half. UVM started to make a comeback, but the Hawks had efforts from everyone making it hard to catch up. The score at the end of the first half was 41-33.
Despite having a demanding lead at the break, Vermont was on a mission and ultimately tied the game at 50 halfway through the second half. The second half was like watching a tennis match with the score going back-and-forth. Hartford was able to take the lead in the final seconds, but Vermont’s Ben Shungu tipped the ball in at the buzzer. The game headed into overtime, where Hawk’s own Moses Flowers put some finesses on a last-second layup to secure the nail-biter win. Austin Williams led all scorers with 34 points. Flowers also had an impressive stat line where he put up 18 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
The Hartford Hawks continue the homestand looking to carry their momentum into a game against the University of Maine Black Bears on February 16 at 7:00 pm.
