The Hartford Hawks baseball team dropped two of three this past weekend. The Hawks traveled to Lowell, Massachusetts, where they took on UMass Lowell in a three-game series. The Hawks entered the game with a 3-9 conference record, just behind the University of Albany.
Both teams started hot in Game 1, with Hartford trailing by only one run after two innings. However, after a disastrous third inning by the Hawks, UMass Lowell extended its lead by four additional runs. By the seventh inning, the Hawks were trailing by nine runs, and the game was all but done. The River Hawks took Game 1 by a score of 20-4.
The second game was a closer contest as UMass Lowell stole the win late in 10 innings of play. The final game of the series was another nail-biter. After a slow start by Hartford, the Hawks had to salvage the game. After an eighth-inning collapse by Lowell, the Hawks found themselves right back in the game. However, the Hawks had trouble closing out the game. An inside-the-park home run allowed UMass Lowell to get back into the game. After nine innings, the game was tied 12-12. That would not last long as Derek Tenney homered in the 10th inning to give Hartford the win in Game 3. Tenney ended the weekend with six hits and five RBIs. Teammate Tremayne Cobb Jr. was also impressed with four hits and two RBIs.
The Hawks’ next game is scheduled for Tuesday, April 19, in Poughkeepsie, New York, against Marist College.
