Public Safety Officer Mystery: Do I show ID?

Maddie Gill, Managing Editor

As every UHart student knows, when you first pull into the main entrance of the University, there is a “toll booth” of sorts that you must pass to be granted access to campus. Each day, or each change of shift rather, comes with a different attitude from the public safety officer in charge of monitoring who enters campus.

Sometimes, the person is unbothered, on their laptop, not even looking to see whether or not you belong with just a wave of their hand. Other times, I’m fumbling to grab my ID while driving to quickly to flash to the person who may as well be interrogating me. Despite having a parking sticker too, I have still been given a hard time by public safety officers if I can’t grab my ID, or forgot it.

If the University is really concerned about student safety or preventing those who aren’t students from entering campus, then all public safety officers need to be on the same page. Not that I don’t enjoy breezing through the main entrance, but I would rather know that all the officers are following the same procedure to avoid the headache of rolling the dice with what experience you’re going to have.
