On November 7th, the Hartford Informer had the privilege of sitting down with Chief Kaselouskas to talk about the role Public Safety plays on campus.
Chief Kaselouskas discussed his daily responsibilities and emphasized the preparation that goes into getting his organization ready for “the worst that could happen.” He also emphasized the organization’s goal to reach the campus community, as well as the desire to be there for students whenever they face issues severe enough to prompt the intervention of Public Safety: “Usually our interactions are when something negative has happened to them, and [we’re] always looking to make that positive.”
When discussing effective lines of communication, Chief Kaselouskas mentioned the Public Safety Advisory Board, which meets monthly. The board enables Chief Kaselouskas to communicate with administrators, students, and the director of residential life, fostering a dialogue between Public Safety and the broader campus community. He emphasized this form of communication as an important part of developing trust and transparency.
On the subject of the role students play in making campus a safer place, Chief Kaselouskas emphasized that students should not “live on edge.” However, he advised them to be prepared and report suspicious activity on campus. He emphasized the importance of character, both among students and Public Safety officers, as the most vital part of a safe campus environment.
